Time and Communication

Rwanda is in the Central Africa Time Zone (CAT) and does not observe daylight saving time. The country has several mobile operators, including MTN, Airtel, and Tigo, providing good call quality and coverage. Mobile phone coverage is extensive, covering around 95% of the country.

Money and shopping

The local currency in Rwanda is the Rwandan Franc (RWF), with an exchange rate of approximately 1 USD to 1,000 RWF. Although Rwanda does not officially accept other currencies, some establishments may accept US dollars or euros. Payment by bank cards is becoming more common, especially in urban areas, but cash is still the most widely used form of payment. Visa and Mastercard are generally accepted, but American Express and Discover cards may not be. Currency exchange offices typically operate during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Transportation

Public transportation in Rwanda consists mainly of buses and shared taxis, called “matatus.” In Kigali, the public bus system is well-organized, and motorcycle taxis are a popular and affordable way to get around. Private taxis are also available but can be more expensive. Renting a car is possible, but driving in Rwanda can be challenging due to poor road conditions in some areas.
